Disabled women more vulnerable to rape

Research in Germany has concluded. Those who have physical or mental disabilities or who suffer from mental illness are three times more likely to be raped than other women
Shahrzadnews: Disabled women throughout the world are are much more vulnerable to rape than others, and need extra state support to protect them from sexual abuse, research in Germany has concluded. Those who have physical or mental disabilities or who suffer from mental illness are three times more likely to be raped than other women. The study found that in many cases disabled girls had been raped repeatedly before reaching adulthood. “The figures worldwide are equivalent to 10% of the German population,” said the German News Agency .
The agency said 1561 women aged between 16 and 65 and with various types of disability took part in the survey. Between 20 and 34% had been raped as children or teenagers. Between 58 and 75% had been subjected to psychological violence, and a further 21 to 44% to physical violence .
The German family affairs ministry is to launch an emergency telephone service in the new year, to provide help and counselling for women threatened with violence .
