Turkey thwarts Iran weapons shipment to Hezbollah

Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung daily quotes ‘Western diplomats’ as saying that Turkish authorities stopped a large weapons shipment on border with Syria.

Turkey has thwarted an Iranian weapons shipment meant for Hezbollah three months ago, a German daily reported on Thursday, quoting “Western diplomats.”

According to the report in Süddeutsche Zeitung, on April 30, Turkish authorities stopped a truck containing a large amount of weapons in the city of Kilis near Turkey’s border with Syria.

The shipment was supposed to be transferred from Iran via Turkey to Syria, where it was supposed to reach the hands of Hezbollah in Lebanon. Turkish officials refused to comment on the report.

On March 31, Turkey informed the United Nations Security Council that it seized a cache of weapons which Iran was attempting to export on board a Syria-bound plane, in breach of a UN arms embargo. An inspection turned up the weapons, which were listed as “auto spare parts” on the plane’s documents.
